Waterproofing that copes with Paarl’s summer heat and winter rain
Paarl summers are among the hottest in the Western Cape, and the Drakenstein Valley swings from baking afternoons to cold, wet winter fronts. Roof surfaces expand and contract hard every day for months, and older membranes simply cannot keep up: they crack, blister and lift at the edges. That is why waterproofing in Paarl has to be chosen for heat as much as for rain.
NPC carries out waterproofing on homes in the old town beneath Paarl Mountain, on newer estates, on farm buildings and on industrial premises around the town. We also work on nearby estates such as Val de Vie and Pearl Valley.
Waterproofing Paarl roofs for heat cycling
A bituminous torch-on roof that performs well in a mild climate can age quickly under Paarl sun if it is left exposed or poorly protected. We look at the colour, reflectivity and flexibility of the finished system as well as its waterproofing ability. In many cases a reflective or acrylic top coat over a sound membrane, or a flexible polyurethane system, gives better long-term results here.
Heat-reflective roof coatings can also help reduce internal building temperatures, which makes a noticeable difference to top-floor rooms and to warehouses and workshops in summer.
Timing matters too. Applying a membrane in the middle of a scorching Paarl afternoon can cause it to cure too fast or blister, so on hot days our teams start early and plan the application around the cooler hours. In winter we wait for dry spells, because most systems need a dry substrate to bond properly.
What else we see in and around Paarl
The town’s housing ranges from historic buildings along Main Road to modern estates and working farms, so the problems vary. A house built in the early twentieth century has soft brick walls and old lime mortar, while a recent estate home has concealed gutters and parapets. Waterproofing contractors in Paarl are often asked to handle:
- Cracked and blistered flat-roof membranes
- Rising damp in older town homes and heritage buildings
- Box gutters and flashings on estate homes
- Waterproofing on farm sheds, cellars and packhouses
- Retaining walls and planters on newer properties
WHY US?
Some great reasons to choose NPC Painters & Renovators for your next project
How we run a Paarl project
Paarl is close enough to our Brackenfell base for regular site visits during a project, which keeps quality checks frequent rather than occasional. Every quote follows a consultant’s visit and is written around the supplier’s application requirements, so the system is installed the way the manufacturer intends. We work with Sika, a.b.e., Optima Coatings and BASF products. On farms and estates where water use is restricted, we can bring our own non-potable water for cleaning. The owners of NPC remain involved throughout, and larger projects can include stage inspections by the supplier. For a fuller picture of our services, visit our page on waterproofing for every roof type, or see recent damp-proofing and waterproofing photos.

HOW IT WORKS
After a prospective client contacts NPC, we will set up an appointment with one of our consultants at a time that is convenient to the client.
The consultant will come out to your premises to conduct a thorough site inspection. This will also give you the opportunity to discuss any pertinent details with him.
A personalised specification and quotation will be drawn up and submitted to the client for their approval. All the specifications will be based on the relevant supplier requirements.
For large projects, we can request the client’s preferred paint supplier to compile a comprehensive specification.
Upon acceptance of the quotation, a proforma invoice will be sent to the client. Among various other details, it will indicate the deposit required before the project start date can be confirmed.
QUALITY CONTROL
For our clients’ peace of mind, NPC can request one of our suppliers or an independent consultant to do a site inspection and compile a site-specific specification that clearly indicates which products are most suitable for the project and the precise preparation procedures that should be followed.
Regular site inspections by the supplier or consultant and the client can then be scheduled at various stages of the project to ensure that all procedures and standards are being adhered to.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does the waterproofing on my Paarl flat roof keep cracking?
Repeated heating and cooling makes the roof surface expand and contract, and an older or less flexible membrane eventually splits under that movement. Dark, exposed surfaces suffer most. A more flexible system, a reflective top coat or both can extend the life of the waterproofing considerably under Paarl’s summer conditions.
Can a reflective coating keep my Paarl home cooler?
Heat-reflective roof coatings bounce back a good portion of the sun’s heat instead of absorbing it, which can reduce temperatures inside the building. The benefit is most noticeable in rooms directly under the roof and in sheds or workshops. We check the existing roof first, because the coating needs a sound, clean surface to bond to.
Do you waterproof farm buildings and cellars around Paarl?
Yes. We work on sheds, packhouses, cellars and other agricultural buildings, dealing with metal and concrete roofs, gutters and walls partly below ground. Work can be planned around harvest and production periods, and we can supply our own non-potable water where the farm’s supply is limited.
